Coiling is a long established basketry process in which the material that forms the foundation is stitched together with a flexible element called binder. Most cultures have made and used coiled baskets for centuries.
Coiling strengthens the fabric so it can be twisted and manipulated to produce 3D forms.
Cut a length of fabric and fold it down the center, wire can be placed inside for extra support and movement.
Choose a thread that is not too fine.
Tie one end to the fabric so that it is secure.
Wrap the thread tightly around the fabric until you reach the opposite and untied end.
Tie a small not in that end to finish off.
Shibori
Shibori is a japanese technique in which a thin fabric such as polyster is wrapped tightly around a small object, steamed and often dyed to create a raised shape in the fabric, this technique has been used for centuries to create intricate patterns.
Hot Textiles.
We experimented with colouring different materials with disperse dyes and heating these with a heat gun or iron to see the effects these had on the material. We also used the heat gun on types of plastic based wrappers and packets, these melted very quickly and were easy to manipulate.
Health and Safety
Hot textiles
Work in a well ventilated room
Hold heat gun 25mm away from materials
When distressing materials using a heat gun make sure you work on a tile or piece of glass
Keep hands away from materials when using the heat gun
Take care when using hot irons
When distressing material using an iron, make sure the material is placed between 2 sheets of parchment paper
Let materials cool before handling
Heat Press
Ensure heat press is clear from obstruction
Let others in the room know it is on
Do not leave the press unattended
Take care when removing items from the press as covers are very hot
Ensure others are clear of moving parts
Turn press off by switch and plug socket when finished.
Steamer
Clear work area where steamer is situated
Fill bottom reservoir with water between min and max levels
Replace containers with lid
Turn on at the mains and set timer for desired length of time
Remove fabric with tongs or other suitable implement
Be aware items that have been wrapped may be very hot, leave sample to cool down before removing wrapped objects.
